Packing Travel Insurance

When you're preparing to go on holiday, the packing process can be a stressful business. There are clothes to sort out, sun cream and sunglasses to buy, not to mention the toys that will keep the kids occupied on the journey and at the pool.

However, it's also essential to ensure you get the paperwork in order for when you want to go away. Most of us don't think about taking out some level of travel insurance, even if we're just going away for the weekend.

Accidents while on holiday do happen, but accidents abroad can be a costly business if you don't have some holiday insurance cover before you travel.

Whether you're going away for a weekend break, a week in the country or travelling the world, travel insurance is an essential item to ensure you've packed in preparation for your trip.

Policies are available for short breaks and also on a long-term basis - known as annual travel insurance - for those who are looking to travel regularly throughout the year, such as backpacking trips.

As well as taking out some travel insurance, it can also be worth going along to the Post Office and applying for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

A EHIC card can be useful to have as it offers a basic level of protection should you or your family have an accident abroad.

It's worth remembering that a EHIC card will not offer cover against factors such as cancelled flights, lost luggage or expenses if you need to travel home for medical reasons. If you need medical help whilst abroad, however, an EHIC will entitle you to free or reduced medical treatment (depending on which country you've travelled to).

When it comes to travel insurance, it's better to be safe than sorry, and with a range of policies out there to cover a wide variety of holiday activities - including extreme sports cover - it is worth taking out some cover in case you run into difficulties.
